In response to the novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), we are taking precautions to maintain the health and safety of our employees and candidates. As a result, interviews for the foreseeable future will be held virtually through Microsoft Teams or Skype.
What is a virtual interview?
A virtual or video interview uses technology to replace the in-person interaction between the candidate and the Recruiter and/or Hiring Manager. We ask that you use video for your virtual interview. Please let your Recruiter know if you do not have access to a device with a camera.
Things you will need:
- Computer (preferred), tablet, or cellphone with video camera and microphone
- Reliable internet connection
- Headphones (optional)
1. Test Your Technology
The day before your interview, make sure both your audio and video devices are connected and functioning properly. Download relevant video software (Microsoft TEAMs, Skype, Zoom, etc.) and test it out with a friend or family member at least one day prior to your interview. It is also a good idea to ask the interviewer for a backup number to call should you experience unexpected technical difficulty. If you are having technical difficulty, contact your Recruiter immediately.
2. Dress Appropriately
While you may be at home, resist the temptation of being too casual. Dress as you would if you were meeting the employer in-person.
3. Set the Scene
Set yourself up in a quiet, clean, and well-lit area with ample natural light. Your background should be a neutral color and be free from a lot of distractions. Set your computer on a desk or table and make sure that your camera is at eye level.
4. Limit Distractions
Limit any potential interruptions and noise as much as possible. Set your phone on silent, place dogs in a designated area, close windows, etc. Utilize the mute button on your screen or mobile device to limit the amount of noise in the background when you are not speaking.
Just as you would if you were meeting in-person, preparation is key during a virtual interview. Do your research on the company and the position for which you are applying. Practice your answers to common interview questions with a friend or family member and resist the temptation to use your computer for research during the interview.
6. Body Language
Though a firm handshake may temporarily be a thing of the past, conveying confidence and professionalism through body language is not. Smile, sit up straight, look directly into the camera making sure that the camera is set at eye level (you may need to prop your device up on a few books to achieve this) and be personable. Resist the temptation to bounce or swivel in your chair.
7. Follow Up
Just as you would if you were interviewing in-person, send an email within 24 hours to whomever you interviewed with. Be sure to thank them for their time but also highlight the reasons why you believe you are the ideal choice for the position. If there was a question you wish you would have answered differently or a qualification you want to elaborate on further, this is the opportunity to do so.
